Schedule Appointments Now to Help Students Start the School Year Healthy
As families prepare for the upcoming school year, now is the time to schedule back-to-school
immunizations. Staying up to date on recommended and required vaccinations helps protect students, families, and the community from vaccine-preventable diseases while ensuring children are ready for the first day of class. Scheduling appointments early helps avoid the late-summer rush and allows enough time to complete any required vaccine series before school begins.
Illinois law requires certain immunizations for students entering daycare, kindergarten, sixth grade, ninth grade, and college. Additional recommendations may vary based on age and individual health needs. Families should check with their healthcare provider or local health department to ensure their child is up to date.

“Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect children from serious illnesses,” said Carrie Eldridge, Supervisor of Nursing and Family Services. “We encourage parents and guardians to review their child’s immunization records and make an appointment as soon as possible to ensure they’re ready for a healthy and successful school year.”
Parents and caregivers should:
• Review their child’s immunization record.
• Contact their healthcare provider or local health department to determine whether any vaccines
are needed.
• Bring immunization records and insurance cards for all healthcare visits.
Jackson County Health Department is a Vaccines for Children (VFC) provider, which means low-cost shots are available for qualifying children. The health department also accepts many insurance plans, including Medicaid Managed Care Organizations.

Immunization services are provided by appointment Monday-Friday from 8:30am – 3:30pm, with additional hours on Tuesdays until 5:30pm. Please bring your child’s shot record and insurance information with you.
